It started, as many things do, with a video game. Somewhere between commanding armies in Total War: Warhammer and losing hours to the lore, I found myself wanting to understand the world behind the battles. That led me to the novels — Gotrek and Felix first, then the grim spiral of Warhammer 40,000. When I picked up the first Horus Heresy audiobook and heard Loken Garviel’s story unfold, I was done for.
My girlfriend noticed. After a visit to our local Warhammer store, she surprised me with a starter set for my birthday — Skaven and Stormcast Eternals, sitting in a box, full of potential. For a while, that’s exactly where they stayed: in the box. Life gets in the way.
Then one day I finally sat down, opened the box, and picked up a brush for the first time. Three miniatures later, I was hooked in a way I hadn’t expected. There’s something almost meditative about it — the focus, the patience, the slow transformation of grey plastic into something with character.
I’ve since spent a lot of time watching tutorials, listening to lore podcasts, and learning from painters who’ve been doing this for years. Most of them are already brilliant. And that’s exactly why I wanted to start this blog — to document the beginning. The messy, imperfect, learning-as-I-go beginning that most people skip over.
Here you’ll find my honest progress: the mistakes, the happy accidents, the time it actually takes, the money I’ve spent, and slowly — hopefully — the improvement. I’m also using this as a way to grow creatively: to get better at writing, at photography, and at telling stories through pictures.
If you’re a seasoned painter, a fellow beginner, or just someone curious about the hobby — welcome. I’d love to build a small corner of the internet where we can share all of this together, no matter your level or where in the world you are.
